About Us

What is the UNESCO Chair on Science Diplomacy and Scientific Heritage?

Established and recognized by UNESCO on March 27, 2022, the UNESCO Chair on Science Diplomacy and Scientific Heritage is a distinguished academic initiative dedicated to addressing global challenges through regional projects.

This Chair is unique for:

  • Integrating Latin America into the search for solutions that prioritize science and technology as central pillars of human development and historical progress
  • Representing one of the first efforts in Latin America to adopt the concept of Science Diplomacy, developing a regional perspective with cultural codes tailored to our context and reality.

In an increasingly globalized world with universal issues, Science Diplomacy is essential as it fosters international relations for the benefit of humanity, transcending political, economic, religious, or social conflicts.

Our Mission

To establish a transdisciplinary academic space for education, research, dissemination, and strategic collaboration to promote knowledge diplomacy in the public agenda, as well as the recognition of scientific heritage as a fundamental part of the historical evolution and identities of the world’s peoples.

Our Vision

To contribute to the development of research and educational capacities in science diplomacy at UNAM, as well as to the research and promotion of scientific heritage.

It combines two novel areas of study

SCIENCE DIPLOMACY

Addresses the international scenarios of science and technology, as well as the rapprochement between scientific communities and national, regional, and multilateral entities responsible for foreign policy.

HERITAGE OF SCIENCE

Recognize the historical-cultural value of the mobility of knowledge by making visible the diverse origins of scientific traditions and promoting the recovery of objects, buildings, and stories that give identity and idiosyncrasy to the sciences and ideas that have been developed.

Together, diplomacy and heritage of science open a critical window to understand science as an inherent part of culture and understanding among the peoples of the earth.
